The novel dilogy of the Scottish writer Archibald Kronin “Young Years” (1944) and the “Shannon path” (1948) is largely autobiographical. The early death of parents forces six -year -old Robert Shannon to look for a shelter in the house of relatives who begin to compete with each other for influence on the boy. Difficulties in growing up, conflicts with peers, first friendship and first betrayal, poverty, belonging to a Catholic religious minority and, as a result, the oblique views of others - all this will be able to experience Robert in his childhood and adolescence. However, purposeful and stubborn, he finds the strength to remain faithful to his hobbies and ambitious dreams, break out of the close provincial world for him, realize his scientific calling and take the first steps in the profession.
In the second novel of Dilogy, Robert-a young ambitious infectious disease doctor who has recently returned from the war, working at the Research Institute and standing on the threshold of stage discovery in the field of bacteriology-is faced with envy of colleagues and bureaucratic intrigues, and, not knowing how to go For compromises, loses its place and forcedly becomes a practicing doctor, while continuing to continue his research. He also has to go through a test of love for the beautiful and smart Jin Lowe, whose prosperous and secured future, painted in front of her parents, after meeting with Robert, can no longer be the same
