The collection includes two novels by the famous English writer Elizabeth Gaskell: "Wife and daughter" and "Mary Barton". These books mark themselves the beginning and end of the literary life of one of the most famous English writers of the 19th century. The novel of the "wife and daughter" was Gaskell"s last work. By nature, the novel is close to the works of Charlotte Bronte, with which Gaskell was very friendly, and the subtle irony in the image of provincial snobbery and prejudice relates him with the tradition of Tekkestea and Dickens. "Mary Barton" - the first and, according to many, the best Roman Gaskell - was released in 1848. The dramatic, sometimes almost action -packed story of love and moral growing up the beauty Mary Barton, provided Gaskell with a honorable place among the wonderful novelists of the Victorian era
