How to be a person? - The question that the heroine of the book is trying to answer is an awl, along with the closest friend Margo and their friends - modern artists and intellectuals living today in Toronto. The characters of the book are trying to find their place in life, in creativity and in relations with people, travel, try different professions, fall into sad and ridiculous situations. A sudden conflict with the best friend makes the heroine-writer to look at herself and her life differently. How to be a person? - This is an ironic mixture of autobiography and fiction written by a daring, modern, vivid and figurative language. Shila Heti writes in search of meaning, simultaneously depriving the act of writing and the language of sacred significance. Constantly switching between prose and a dramatic dialogue, including fragments of Imail correspondence in the text, it disorients the reader, breaking the rhythm of the narrative whenever he becomes familiar. The rules of the game in the novel are re -pursued again and again with the same seriousness and cunning, with which the title issue itself sounds in the 21st century.
A very bizarre, but witty attempt to find authenticity.
