In a series of lectures for the project "Magistry", a researcher of creativity L.N. Tolstoy Ilya Bendermsky, a teacher of the school of philological sciences of the Higher School of Sciences, tells how the idea of the novel "War and Peace", how difficult the history of this work was and remained in the process of writing. Two themes of the course are devoted to Tolstoy’s views on the story and how his work perceives by professional historians, researchers of the Patriotic War of 1812. A separate lecture presents the reader history of the novel in Russia and the USSR - its perception before and after 1917, during the Great Patriotic War and in the post -war period. The final lecture is devoted to the influence of the ideas of L. N. Tolstoy, expressed on the pages of the novel "War and Peace", on the philosophical thought of the next time
