The French prose writer and playwright Andre Jew in the soul was a romantic. He did not accept Catholicism, critically treated Protestantism, as, indeed, in general, to any variety of faith, which is squeezed into the framework of certain institutions. At the same time, Andre believed that in his soul he was closer to faith than official representatives of the church. It is no accident that Andre liked communist ideas so much. He wanted to believe in them. It is not surprising that the young Soviet state, which arose shortly after the 1917 revolution, aroused a lively interest among the writer. It seemed to him capable of challenging European filler, to resist the hypocrisy, money -grubbing and other vices that European capitalism managed to form. In the first third of the XX century. The new owners of Russia were looking for allies and like -minded people among the creative European intelligentsia. Andre Jew seemed to them a completely suitable figure for this role. Before the outbreak of World War II in the USSR, four volumes of his works were published very decent by Western standards. Andre at that time traveled to the French equatorial Africa, where he saw an unpleasant flip side of the colonial policy of his own country. Disappointment was complete. The same situation later occurred with its perception of socialism in Russia. In the summer of 1936, Andre visited the USSR. Returning home, he published a couple of essays, in which he almost equated the totalitarianism of the Stalinist state with the repressive pressure of Hitler Germany. As a result of the writer in Soviet Russia, they stopped printing, he fell into a kind of disgrace, which ended only at the end of the 20th century. Now our compatriots have the opportunity to more fully get acquainted with the work of Andre Jew. “The Vatican Dungeons” is one of his most unusual works, he can be classified as a detective genre. In this edition of the Vatican"s Dungeons, the exquisite drawings of the French artist Jean Emil Labourin, who are well conveying the spirit of modernism. The future designer, engraver and watercolist was born in 1877 in a wealthy family. At the request of his father, the young man was supposed to receive a legal education, but the orders of the soul forced him to look for his calling in art. Lababorer became a student of the famous French engraver of Auguste Leper. Then he traveled a lot - he has been to the USA and Canada more than once, visited England, Italy, Greece and Turkey. Osev in Paris, Laborer began to specialize in illustrating books and magazines, and also wrote several books on the art of engraving. Nowadays, his work can be seen in the Louvre and the Orsa Museum. The adventurous novel of the famous French intellectual Andre Jew “The Vatican Dungeons” was first published in 1914, and has since been repeatedly reprinted. In this publication, he was given in the translation of M. Bronnikov edited by A. A. Smirnov and A. N. Tikhonov. The text is illustrated by the elegant drawings of Jean Emil Laburner
