The Russian -speaking Israeli prose writer David Markish is the author of two dozen books in which Russian and Jewish history and culture are inextricably intertwined. His novel “Be like everyone else”, full of bright and acute satire about the truth of the life of those who had “happiness” to live “in the era of change”. The action of the novel unfolds against the background of perestroika and the collapse of the Soviet Union of the late 1980s-early 1990s. The heroes of the novel on the fragments of the empire are looking for and find their own path to the promised Earth: “What was, it will be, and what was done, it will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun.”
