I"m six years old. My grandfather and I go in blue winter twilight along the path between high snowdrifts. From afar, the House of Culture of railway workers shines with cheerful lights.
From the end - the porch of the library. At the door is a broom. We set ourselves felt boots and enter into close warmth, in the kingdom of read, a lot of things that have seen books. They smell not with dust, but with stove smoke, candies, sometimes even puppies and cats. These books shake corners, pages fall out. They probably participated in some scuffs. Their roots are in patches, and on the covers there are blots or ice cream spots.
We have no less books at home than in this library, but there are no such exposure, and I am gaining five pieces. Grandfather signs for them, and we are happy to go out in the cold.
In a week we go to the library to return books. And again, somehow solemnly on the soul, although it is a pity to part with the favorite books.
You recall more acutely and brighter what you parted with.
Here with this memory of meetings and partings, I wrote a book that is now in your hands.
