“The True Life of Sevastyan Knight” is the first English -language novel by Vladimir Nabokov, ended in 1939 in Paris and two years later published in the United States. His labyrinth structure and quasi -detective plot predetermined the originality of the subsequent prose of Nabokov - “Lolita”, “Pale Fire”, “Ada” and especially his last completed book “Look at the Harlequins!”. The narrator, indicated only by the initial of V., restores the story of the life of his own half -brother, the late writer Sevastian Knight, using memories, oral stories and excerpts from his books. Eligible from the persistent search of V., the true life of Knight turns out to be directly related to his secret name, with his works, with the laws of verbal art and with metaphysics of Nabokov.
The real edition of the novel is accompanied by a preface, notes of the final outline of the translator.
The features of spelling, punctuation and transliteration of the translator are preserved
