The main character of Roman Matis is an ordinary "little" man. He lives in the outskirts of Riga and is not at all a superhero, but the bearer of the main humanistic and Christian values. An unbiased look at the fateful events for Latvia and the rest of the world, expressed through the consciousness of the young man, became one of the reasons for the success of the novel. The ruthless whirlwind of history delays Matisa, who wants to live, work, and love.
The sincere intonation with which the author lives the life of his hero, scrupulously reproducing the spoken language and everyday circumstances, bribes from the first pages. In the seemingly simple ironic, even in some ways, the almost vaudeval principle is gradually woven in melodramatic notes, which, through the thickening drama lead to the tragedy of the highest intensity
