The inhabitants of the town of Bari in the south of Italy are called Maria Malakarna - a bad seed. Such a nickname in childhood gave her a grandmother for an indomitable explosive disposition. A little dark -skinned woman has a proud character, and observe the harsh rules of the area in which she grew up is worse for her death. The only outlet of Malakarne is friendship with a classmate Michele, a clumsy fat boy, the same outcast as she herself.
Years are going, Maria is growing up, and in it is the desire to escape from the dirt and cruelty of her native quarter. But only the old city does not let it go, tightly entangled with invisible threads of kinship with poor dilapidated houses and ancient bridge stones.
