In the gloomy 1921, in his famous speech "On the appointment of the poet", Alexander Blok proposed an immortal formula: "Fun name - Pushkin". And he added: "The role of the poet is not light and not fun: it is tragic.
These words could be taken by the epigraph to the book of the famous historian and writer Jacob Gordin. This is a book about the tragedy of the poet and thinker, who died, fulfilling his duty to Russia.
On this path, A. S. Pushkin, who preached the idea of honor and nobility as the basis of true patriotism, faced the ideologist of the Nikolaev reign of the Minister of Education S. S. Uvarov, a supporter of the Enlightenment of Slavery, which represented a powerful imperial bureaucracy. And this collision turned out to be deadly. The tragedy of Pushkin, who had foreseen the upcoming disasters and dreamed of preventing them, was a continuation and completion of the tragedy of the “noble avant -garde”.
