The first book of the trilogy of Konstantin Simonov saw the light in 1960. The novel “Living and Dead” was a deafening success in the Soviet Union and was already filmed in 1964. The author of the novel was not only a talented writer, but also a military correspondent during the war years, because the book has no place for the fiction. The trilogy is included in the list of “100 books on the history, culture and literature of the peoples of the Russian Federation recommended by schoolchildren for independent reading.” The first part of the trilogy is written on the basis of front notes K.M. Simonova and in many ways echoes the author’s personal experience.
There are many images and characters in the novel, but there are only two main characters - Politruk Ivan Sintsov and brigade commander Fedor Serpilin. These heroes are the personification of the Soviet officer. Serpilin is a hero of the Civil War, a successful red commander who has passed through the millstone of repressions, but remained faithful to the Motherland. Sintsov is a young commander, already in the early days, faced with military tribunals and the need to make excuses
