"Children of Isan" of the writer Khamphun Bunthavi are considered an outstanding work of Thai literature, clearly and frankly illustrating the lifestyle of ethnic Laosians and the condition of the northeastern region of the country (Isan), unfamiliar to the gaze of numerous tourists. In the center of the story is the stamina and patience of the inhabitants of the most adverse in the climatic plan of the Thai region, their eternal confrontation of drought and deprivations that form the national character of the Isans. The novel introduces the reader to the life of the rural community of Thailand in the middle of the 20th century, with its problems and joys, with heavy climate and poverty. This is a visual and frank illustration of the lifestyle of ethnic Lao, not without a share of humor and optimism transmitting the mood of a village society to a turning point for the country"s history. In 1979, the work received the highest literary prize of Southeast Asia (S.E.A.Write), and Khamphun Bunthavi became the first Thai writer awarded this prestigious award. The Five Star film company redeemed a license for the film adaptation. His popularity did not decline, and some foreign publishers acquired the rights to translation, in particular, to Japanese, French and English
