From childhood, Jean understood what it means to be an outcast: abandoned by his mother at seven months, he grew up in state institutions for orphans, was convicted of theft and pimility. Already in prison, having received life imprisonment, he began to write. Pornography and open glorification of crime in his work was combined with a high, almost baroque literary style, thanks to which Jean’s talent received recognition of Jean-Paul Sartra, Jean Kocto and Simona de Bovoir.
Since 1970, he spent two years in Jordania , in the camps of Palestinian refugees. He was drawn to these restless people, and this attraction turned out to be as difficult for him as durable. “The captive in love”, written ten years later, when many of the people who knew his wife were killed, and he was dying, represents a bright and strong description of that historical period and people.
