Elwood Curtis, a sixteen -year -old African American teenager, studies well, after school he is working on in a store, preparing for admission to college: he dreams of becoming a teacher. But because of an absurd accident, he is accused of a crime that he did not commit, and is sentenced to time in a correctional institution.
Nickel Academy is a real hell, where the pupils are subjected to physical and emotional violence and operation. Those who resist, take away "to the backyards", from where they no longer return. Friendship with Terner, who is his complete opposite, helps to survive in this hell of Elwood. Elwood naive and believes in the possibility of a triumph of justice, and Turner is convinced that the world was, is and will be cruel and unfair, and it will always be so.
A desperate attempt by friends to change the orders reigning in the "nickel" ends in a tragedy.
The novel was based on the history of a real correctional school in Florida, over a hundred years of existence of thousands of teenagers who crippled the life.
