The novel tells about the path of the martial arts of Count T (probably refers to Leo Tolstoy), who fled from his house from the royal guard and with an unknown goal sneaks into Optina deserts, which in the context of this novel does not find features not The famous monastery of Orthodoxy, or either a certain Shambhala, or an incomprehensible place of spiritual enlightenment that exists in the real world. Then "Optina" turns into "Solovyovskaya", and here everything becomes even more incomprehensible and confusing. On the way to Optina Desert, Count T. meets the Kabbalistic creature of Ariel. Ariel, along with five literary blacks, come up with and write a story about Count T., which Ariel tells about the count about. However, T. does not really like to be subordinate to some five dubious types. Therefore, he is trying to intercept their initiative and become an author himself.
Viktor Pelevin’s novel became the finalist of the National Literary Prize contest "Big Book" and eventually took third place, and in folk vote - first place.
It is reprinted in the series "Folk Collected Works Viktor Pelevin", which over the past ten years has managed to acquire the status of a cult and become a Bukinistic rarity
