Eugene Shavett (real name Vesette) was born on June 28, 1827 in Paris in the family of a famous restaurateur and owner of the literary cafe Joseph Vesette. A man of iron principles and a strict temper, Vesitt wanted his son to choose a serious profession of a notary public, but the young man was fond of theater and secretly wrote vaudeville from his father. After the premiere, Vasette Sr. was furious and put his son before the choice: either inheritance or rejection of high honor
Bear surname. Eugene did not hesitate for a long time: deftly shuffling the letters in the tribal name, the newly -minted playwright came up with a new surname - Shavett - and left his father’s house.
The author’s brisk feather and humor attracted the attention of newspaper men, and Shavett began to be printed first in the theater weekly Le Tintamarre, and then in the prestigious newspaper Le Figaro. Illuminating
The social and cultural life of the capital, he generously shared his observation with readers who liked his witty sketches about the morals and features of Parisians. Subsequently, these notes were released in the collections “Little Comedies of Vice” and “Little Drama of Virtue”, one of which Eugene Shanvett devoted “to his best friend - Eugene Vesette.”
For all his cheerfulness, the writer never forgot how long he lived in complete solitude, without any support of his father. An interesting fact is that it is Shavette that has a modest merit - the “discovery” of the future “father of the French detective” Emil Gaborio. The fact is that the first publication of the novel by Gaberio “The Widow of Lerouzh” was almost unnoticed. However, Eugene, having read the text, was delighted and convinced the publisher of another newspaper that this novel is interesting, original and needs only good advertising. In the literature, there were already musketeers, and avengers, and robbers, but here the main character is a detective! And the plot-head is built on the investigation and capture of the criminal. It is fresh and incredibly interesting!
Reprint of the “Affairs of the Widow Lerozh” caused a splash. Readers demanded as many such a genre as possible, so the publishers threw the cry, and Gaberio began to imitate. Including SHETETT himself. Among his best works are “crime room”, “prosecutor Brisha”,
“The escaped notary”, “Favorite concierge” and others. During the life of the writer, they enjoyed great success, were translated into several languages, including Russian.
A mandatory attribute of each Roman Shavett is a fatal secret. So, for example, the protagonist of the book “The Running Notary” in an attempt to find a blond beauty, whom he noticed, examining the surroundings of Montmartre from the telescope, is drawn into an investigation of a terrible crime committed in an old castle. All the inhabitants of the castle are under suspicion, because each of them hides something ...
The main intrigue of the novel “Prosecutor Brisha” unfolds around the personality of the faithful servant of the law, accidentally or deliberately called the criminal sentenced to death among his accomplices. The subsequent disappearance of the prosecutor is only confusing the matter, because it is unclear: either he went on the run, or was killed, or abducted ... He keeps in tension to the last page and the novel “The Room of Crime”, the plot of which is built on the mystery of a closed space.
The author offers readers together with his heroes to plunge into the dizzying whirlpool of events, polish your detective skills and unravel the ball of secrets
