V.G. Zebald (1944-2001) - a German writer, poet and historian of literature, teacher of the University of East England, author of four novels and not any other essay collections. The novel "Ring of Saturn" was released in 1998.
In August 1992, when the summer heat slept, I went on a hiking trip on the county of the sufferer, hoping to get rid of the feeling of emptiness that gripped me (after a rather great work) This hope has come true to some extent. For days I walked along the seashore past the desert villages, experiencing a strange feeling of emancipation.
However, on the other hand, now it seems to me justified by an old superstition, according to which certain diseases of the soul and body are stuck under the sign of Sirius. In any case, then my memories languished.
Not only about the blissful freedom of movement, but also about the horror that suddenly paralyzed me even in this remote area in the east of England at the sight of traces of destruction, leading far into the past.
Is large literature possible today? How, with the inexorable grinding of writer"s ambitions and, on the contrary, the dominance of the seriates, chatter and the indifferent aggressiveness of the running heroes of prose, could literature worthy of its name today?
