Pyotr Ivanovich Bartenev (1829-1912) - a Russian historian and literary critic - is rightfully considered the founder of Russian Pushkin Studies. Bartenev was the first among his contemporaries to record the memories of eyewitnesses about the poet that he beloved by him. Pyotr Ivanovich was the last of the guardians of living oral stories about Pushkin. He talked with many people who knew the poet personally. As the outstanding literary critic-Pushkinist M.A. Qyavlovsky: "The main merit of Bartenev before Pushkin Studies is the collection and publication of materials on the biography of the poet. In this regard, there was no and, of course, there will be no equal among the Pushkinists. "
This publication presents the most important works of Bartenev "Rod and Childhood of Pushkin" and "Pushkin in Southern Russia", also many small articles regarding individual episodes of the poet’s life and work. In the second and third parts of the book, the memoirs of contemporaries about Pushkin are placed, first collected and published by Bartenev
