But all this change of historical optics does not harm the novel of Okudzhava, since he was originally conceived and was written as a book about ambiguous people and difficult times. About such times in which you can see the origins of our time. The problems are all the same: the people and power, nobility and meanness, ideals and betrayal ... The hero who gave the name to the novel, an ordinary member of the "Secret Committee to find the accomplices of an attacked society", is just a record of interrogations. He has a complete porridge in his head - an amazing mixture of ideological cliches, dangerous thoughts, fear of conspirators and involuntary sympathy for them. As another great bard of our era wrote, Alexander Galich, "And the point is not in the metric, a century is a trifle."
