A collection of stories is dedicated to episodes from life, Pomor of the graduate of the Leningrad Marine Academy by the will of the chance that found himself during perestroika in Ukraine. In one of the stories, his fate is closely intertwined with the life of captain of the second rank, Pomor Kurochkina B., whose parents worked on a lighthouse on the island of Bolshoi Zhuzhmuy on the White Sea. Once, during an autumn storm, a mother dies on his hands, because Doctors could not get to the island and provide her with medical care.
If before this misfortune our hero dreamed of becoming the captain of a large ship, now he vowed to devote his life to medicine in order to help people living in the north in such conditions. He was lucky enough to enter the Naval Academy by S. Kirov, having fulfilled a childhood dream: to become a sailor and a doctor. After graduation at the Academy, he receives an appointment to the “shark” - the largest submarine in the world. During the service, about its unique surgical operations during scuba diving near the coast of America, the entire underwater fleet of Russia becomes known. But after the collapse of the Union, so as not to break with the White Sea, he resigns, acquires a sea boat and becomes the captain of his own ship.
His young wife, whom he met and fell in love with a graduation evening at the Academy remains in St. Petersburg and divorces him in a few years. Twenty years later, he accidentally meets the Norwegian of the Pomeranian roots and, after a message about the birth of his son, leaves for Norway, writing in the last letter to the author to bury his ashes under the cross on the sails of the White Sea
