The book included two works of Andrei Platonov (1899-1951), which during his lifetime were not and could not be published. But it was Platonov’s “foundation pit” who was destined to become the most clear and terrible metaphor of the “great turning point”, laying the "foundation of socialism". This is a book about how serences, grumbling cyclopean pit of slurred purposes, themselves turn into the consumable material of the great construction. Joseph Brodsky, having read the “foundation pit”, noticed: “The first thing to do, closing this book, is to cancel the existing world order and declare a new time.” Relatively new times have come, following the "foundation" (1969), the eastern story of Jan (in full form in 1999), “anticipated a lot in world literature, in particular, such a phenomenon as Latin American prose” (Natalya Kornienko ) And the world order is gradually improving. But Andrei Platonov, with his merciless honesty and incredible speech, does not give us peace. He makes us peer in anxiety not so much into the eerie world captured by him as in our own souls
