“We all left the Gogol’s“ Overcoat, ”Russian writers rightly say ...” said French critic E.-M. de Vogue in 1885. Today, few people will not agree with this statement today. How did the story of the stolen overcoat provide Gogol"s works with such an honorable place in the literature? To this question, every generation of readers, discovering for themselves a mysterious, strange, fantastic Gogol world-“forever the same, forever new,” answers differently. The St. Petersburg Tales, including Overcoat, Nevsky Prospekt, Nose, Portrait, Notes of a Madman, were first published in the third volume of the works of 1842. The author did not unite them into a special cycle like “Evenings on a farm near Dikanka” or “Mirgorod”, nevertheless, they entered the history of Russian literature as a whole. This publication also includes article by V.M. Markovich and detailed comments
