Mikhail Andreevich Osorgin - a famous Russian writer, journalist, bright representative of emigrant literature. In 1922, together with other opposition writers and scientists, he was expelled from the country on a "philosophical ship". But Osorgin did not lose the spiritual connection with the Fatherland, and after years, dreaming of publishing a collection of his historical stories in Russia, turned to Maxim Gorky: "... a writer ... having a forty -year -old experience, unbearably offended not to be read at his homeland ..."
The book includes stories created in 1934-1935. The narrative begins in the 17th century and gradually, from a story to a story, changing times and an era, moves to the 19th century. The heroes of Osorgin’s stories were like ordinary people - the soldier"s son Vasya Rudny, a thief, a robber and Moscow detective Vanka -Cain, the inventor of the first car Leonty Shamurenkov - and the monarchy people: Peter the Great, Elizaveta Petrovna, Catherine the Great. The masterful possession of the word, the liveliness and accuracy of domestic, based on historical documents and memoirs, allow the author to reveal the true picture of the spiritual state of the society displayed and remind the reader that each story is the dramatic fate of an ordinary person.
