The action of the novel unfolds during the occupation of Greece by German and Italian troops in the provincial town of Bastion. The main character of the book is the girl Rarau. Even before the occupation, her father went to the Albanian front, leaving his wife and three children - Rarau and her two brothers. Hunger begins in the country, and in order to save children, the mother of Rarau becomes the mistress of the Italian officer. With the liberation of the country of all women and families who accepted the enemies of the Motherland in their homes, they are recorded in traitors and are wounded throughout the city in a truck in public humiliation. Rarau becomes a witness to a terrible reprisal against the mother and goes all this path with her
