The book is the first monographic study of the poetics of Roman Thomas Mann "Magic Mountain" in Russian literary criticism. The formation of his main character Hans Castorp is considered in the context of the creative biography of the writer and the worldview panorama of the era. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of the specifics of the genre nature of the novel through the prism of discoveries in the field of deep psychology of the first quarter of the 20th century, associated with the names of Z. Freud and K.G. Cabin boy.
