The work of Junytiro Tanizaki (1889-1965) is widely known not only in Japan, but throughout the world. His works have been translated into many languages, films have been shot in Europe by his novels. The finest stylist, the unsurpassed master of literary allusions, a bold experimenter, he was never afraid, and often sought to shock the reader - the publications of some of his works caused a violent public reaction up to the debate in the Japanese parliament on the prohibition of them as immoral and pornographic. The novel Hastens of wormwood (1928) occupies a special place in the legacy of Tanizaki. The hero of the novel is a person living in a difficult time of the broken eras, a person full of contradictions and dissonations, trying to reconcile in himself a traditional culture and the rapidly growing influence of Western modernization
