The demanding and picky, sarcastic and merciless - such epithets can be characterized by M.E."s talent Saltykova-Shchedrin. His satire responded to all significant phenomena of social life, scourging vices, exposing the lies and moral decline of the era of “great reforms”. However, the works of the day, the works of Saltykov-Shchedrin in paradoxically remain modern. In the cycle of essays “Little things of life” (1886–1887), the writer turns to the daily life of ordinary people, where “there is no place for the work of healthy thought, there is no free minute for fruitful work”. The writer with bitterness remarks: Little things, trifles, little things - have flooded all his life. The everyday life with its absence and universality becomes a symbol of catastrophic world order and the futility of spiritual searches in the cycle of “trifles of life”
