Each of the works of Leonid Andreev (1871-1919), included in this book, caused a polemic in society, or even a scandal. Readers put him the brightness of the tongue, paradoxes, addiction to extreme plots. For almost the same qualities, he was reproached - expression on the verge of hysteria, mysticism, psychological tear. We will not forget, however, that in the yard stood the silver age of Russian literature and Leonid Andreev with all his advantages and disadvantages fit perfectly into his mods. But the fashion is a transient thing, and Leonid Andreev’s prose and after the century was quite in trend. "Red laughter" is a protest against militaristic madness. "The story of the seven hanged people" is about the impotence of a "symmetrical answer" to the terrorists who consciously go to death. "Judah is a lekariot" - about the verbose psychology of betrayal. "Diary of Satan" - about how the devil in human form came to the ground and was brutally deceived and replayed by people: "If you are Satan, then you are late here ... Where in your hell you will find such charming, fearless, for all ready -made devils ? " This hypothesis of Andreev has yet to be checked
