The protagonist of the artistic story is a real historical person, St. Petersburg artist Mikhail Mikhailovich Rygranech (1878–1945), who settled in Capri since 1903 after marriage to a local girl. His fate, according to the author, intertwined with the ups and downs of Maxim Gorky, who arranged a propaganda school on the island with an idealistic slope. The Russian revolution, which was prepared by emigrants for Capri, however, went through a different, extremely radical scenario, which carried away to its dramatic whirlpool and characters of the book
