The autobiographical novel Carmen Mary Machado is one of the main representatives of modern prose. Based on her personal experience, the writer explores the mechanisms of psychological violence and tries to figure out how she was in destructive relationships.
For each chapter telling about her long -term novel with a charismatic, but psychologically unstable woman, Carmen uses signs of various literary genres. The features of the horror, eroticism, the stories of growing up, essays and other genres are woven into the canvas. Based on the phenomena of mass culture and accompanying its history with sharp humor, Machado builds a book that will be interesting to connoisseurs of new experimental prose.

You have not always been you. I was a whole - the symbiosis of my best and worst parts - and then split (in one of the meanings of this word): a neatly cut half took the first -person form - a confident woman, a detective, an adventurers - and another, always embarrassed and trembling, like Small dog.
I left and just lived: I moved to the eastern coast, wrote a book, settled with a beautiful woman, married, lived in the sun -flooded apartment, seriously thought to get a dog. I learned a lot: how to make Manhattan, use starchy water from under spaghetti in sauce and draw like that.
And you. You took up work - check standardized tests. Once every two weeks during the year you went to Indiana - seven hours one way. The second half of your dissertation for the degree of the master"s art is mostly garbage. You sobbed in front of many people, you missed readings, parties, super moon. You tried to tell your story to people who are unable to listen. You exposed yourself as a fool - in every way.
I thought you died, but now, when I write, I"m not sure about that.
