After the death of his mother and grandmother, care for his brother and sister fell on the shoulders of older Isma. She pushed aside her dreams, forgot about her ambitions and devoted herself to Anika and Parviz. And so they grew up, and each went their own way. Isma is free and ready to return to a university career. But the concern for his brother and sister did not disappear. Anika is eager and too beautiful. And Parviz chose a dark path - he disappeared in the Middle East, hoping to understand their father -jihadist. Before Isma, Anika, Parviz and other heroes of the novel, the most difficult choice will arise, from which they cannot leave. What is stronger: blood ties or bonds of love? What is more important: mercy or fidelity to the law?
Kamila Shamsi"s novel is a modern version of the Antigons" Sophocles. Ancient tragedy unfolds in the scenery of our days, but the power of human feelings has not weakened since Sophocles. In 2017, the book was nominated for the Booker Award, and in 2018 I received the Women"s Prize prize for a work of art.
A good novelist erodes the border between his heroes and the reader. Camila Shamsi is a rare writer, she makes you completely forget about the existence of such a border.
