The book is based on a hypothesis about the romantic origin of such genres of mass fiction as a historical novel, a novel of horror, "fantasy" and detective, it is stated that the so -called dialectic of good and evil, which underlies all romantic aesthetics, is directly related to the concept of Protestant providentialism. This problem is considered in the historical aspect, special attention is paid to the origin of the Protestant doctrine of predetermination, the historical roots of the emergence of the very idea of the dialectic of good and evil are analyzed.
