Arthur Ivlin Saint-John V (1903-1966) is an outstanding British writer, novelist, journalist, essayist, biographer, critic, one of the subtlest stylists in English prose of the twentieth century, recognized master of black humor and witty, poisonous satire (often permeated, however , hidden lyricism and confessionality, behind which the nostalgic feeling and autobiography of the plot is guessed), the creator of grotesque-laugh fantasies, where life-made ways, psychological types, estimated prejudices, social ulcers and ideological paradoxes slowly, but faithfully departing into the past of the British empire, are bizarre.
The book presents one of the most famous novels by Ivlin in the “handful of dust” (1934) A love affair with a secular loafer John Biver, started by Lady Brand Last"s boredom, soon turns into reckless passion, which leads to dramatic consequences: her husband Tony, a naive idealist and a romantic who hid from the city bustle in the idyllic estate of Hetton and imagined the medieval landlord, Faced with treason, suddenly discovers that his harmonious and rationally arranged world turned into a “handful of dust”. Having lost the love and mental balance, with difficulty surviving the random death of his son and the charter from the divorce of the divorce process, he goes with a scientific expedition to Brazil in search of a certain lost city - where he finds himself in an even more deplorable, albeit tragicomic situation
