When I was ten years old, we emigrated to New York. How amazing is a country where everyone speaks English! These people must have been smarter, I thought. The maids, waiters, taxi drivers, Switches, street tramps, garbagemen - they all spoke this complex language. It took me time to understand that the Americans are not necessarily the highest nation that has surpassed us. It was also natural for them to learn their maternal, as for the Dominican babies - to learn Spanish.
My mother explained that they absorb him with mother’s milk, and for some time I thought that the mother’s language is called maternal, because we get it from the mother’s breast along with nutrients and vitamins.
Soon it did not seem so strange to me that everyone was talking in English, and not in Spanish. I learned to hear this language not as English, but as a meaning. I no longer stirred to understand, I understood. I got used to this second language.
