The novel reflects a difficult period of domestic history associated with the formation of the Murmansk Railway and the formation of the Flotilla of the Arctic Ocean, from which the heroic Northern Fleet was later born. The Russian cruiser "Askold" began combat service in the Dardanella operation, and entered the revolution with the ship of the Northern Flotilla. Most of the novel is devoted to the fight against foreign intervention in Murman, in Arkhangelsk, in Karelia.
For the novel from the dead end, Valentin Pikul was awarded the Literary Prize of the USSR Ministry of Defense for 1987.
