The publication presents the two most significant novels of the English writer Mary Walstoncraft Shalley - one of the key figures in the literature of British and European romanticism.
. The recognized "Frankenstein, or modern Prometheus" - the fruit of the Hero Bairon, on the Swiss Villa Dyodati in June 1816, the competition in the composition of the Gothic stories - turned out to be the first and, as it turned out, the main book of Mary Shelley, forever. entering her name in the history of literature and culture. The original philosophical novel, one of the brightest samples of the romantic Gothic, "Frankenstein, or modern Prometheus" at the same time was the starting point of the science fiction tradition in the narrative prose of new and modern times. For incomplete two centuries, this book, conceptually ascending to the antique myth of Prometheus, itself gave rise to an extensive and influential cultural mythology, growing all with new texts, images and meanings: the name of the daring Swiss experimenter Viktor Frankenstein was firmly imprinted in the memory of Western culture, and invented by the author. Books of a tragic and terrible plot turned out to be open to all kinds of artistic, ideological and scientific interpretations.

In the present edition, the novel is published in the 1831 editorial office, which is noticeably different from the text of the primary and is the final embodiment of the author’s will, at the same time in the commentary - for the first time in Russian - all the fragments significant for the translation version of the book are published The first edition, also representing considerable literary interest. They give a full-fledged idea of the evolution of ideological and philosophical views and artistic attitudes of Mary Shelley.

Firstly published in the Russian translation and the novel "The Last Man", which is related with the debut book of the author, the theme of the existential test of the personality, involved in the will of fate and the logic of history in the inextricably tragic life circumstances. Apocalyptic sentiments and anti -utopian motifs (allowing this work to consider an early model of futurological fantasy) are combined in the “last person” with a piercing love story and obvious elements of the “novel” - a classical literary form, which suggests “coding” in the text of real individuals and genuine situations, known to the reader: in a slightly veiled form, the book depicts key figures from the romantic environment of Mary Shelley - Lord Byron, Percy Bish Shelley, Jane Clermont and others
