Alexei Konstantinovich Tolstoy wrote prose rarely - in essence, all his non -ethical artistic heritage is made up of the novel "Prince Serebryany" and several stories. However, these stories occupy a truly outstanding place in the Gothic literature and demonstrate an amazing combination of the author’s acquaintance with the best European samples of the genre and national originality of perception.
In Tolstoy’s stories, cruel ghouls get out of the graves and hunt vampire-vampires, ghosts and come to life. Persons in portraits, dangerous and strange miracles happen and an atmosphere of gloomy secret and frightening doom reigns, not inferior to the best examples of European Gothic.
