The outstanding writer, Nobel Prize laureate Isaac Bashevis Zinger (1904-1991) was dedicated to the novel "Family Muscat" (1950) of the memory of his older brother. Dedication emphasizes the continuity of the creative relay race, because it was Israel Yoshua Zinger with his famous work “Ashkenazi Brothers” that laid the foundations of a Jewish family novel.
The life of the Warsaw Jews is depicted in the Muscat family for several decades - we will find a large family at a turning point, when under the influence of circumstances the existence of Polish Jews that has been excluded for centuries begins to change, and trace his life for decades. The novel exists in two versions - Yiddish and English, the translation of which we offer the reader.
Its newspaper and journal articles Isaac Bashevis Zinger used to sign the pseudonym I. Warsaw, emphasizing his close connection with the city, which he had forever left in 1935.
In those days, the population of Warsaw, a third consisted of Jews, when the writer worked on the novel "Family Muscat" (the end of the forties) of the Warsaw Jewish community, the whole Jewish civilization was already erased by the Nazis from the face of the earth. In this novel, the author conceived to revive from oblivion forever that disappeared the city, to portray Warsaw in that pre -war, pristine form.
This intention was unequivocally expressed by Zinger in an interview with the literary critic Irving Hau. When asked by the interlocutor, is it true that Zinger wrote the Muscat family, plunging himself into a certain artificial or illusory environment - “as if there were no terrifying events in the history of the Jewish people of the last decades,” the writer answered: “That"s how it happened a business. The famous German philosopher Hans Fayhinger wrote a book entitled "Philosophy" as if in which he claims that we all usually behave, following this principle. Each person believes that his life will continue. He lives as if he had not been destined to die. Therefore, I would not call my approach "artificial" - it is quite natural and benevolent. Whatever happens, you should continue to live - and write. "
"Family Muscat" is a family saga created in the tradition of John Golsourcy or Thomas Mann. The novel depicts the crisis of the traditional Jewish way in Eastern Europe, describing the life of several generations of the muscat family - the pious patriarch of Meshulam and its many descendants, which are characterized by various methods and degree of departure from Jewish tradition: moral misconduct, including adultery and theft, violation of religious establishments, full The abandonment of the Jewish way of life is emigration to America, commitment to secular Zionism and communist ideology, assimilation to the Polish environment, and the transition to Christianity. In addition to the description of the fate of this clan, the book with particular brightness draws the image of Asa-Ghesh, a connoisseur of the Talmud from the province, who in Warsaw expects a typical transformation from zealous Judea to the atheist, and each stage of this transformation corresponds to a certain member of the muscat family, and the gradual transformation of Asa -Hezen in a notorious nihilist is similar to the collective death of the entire family.
