The new novel of the American writer Anne Patchett resembles the fairy tale of the brothers Grimm, which grew to the scale of the family epic. The history of the main characters, Danny Konroit and his sisters Mayv, covers the entire second half of the twentieth century, and their fate is fatally intertwined with the Dutch house - a mansion in the east of Pennsylvania, which once belonged to the Dutch Magnabyk Dutch Magnates. The Dutch house itself is not inhabited by ghosts, but everyone who crosses its threshold is, in a sense, becomes a ghost of the house - wherever he went, wherever he lives, carries this image with him everywhere.
Danny and Mayv only have this: a father, who has passed away for a long time, who had long turned into a memory of his mother, as if emerging from the nightmare of the stepmother and an ominous family mansion. As well as an adult life, which will still not begin: the curse of childhood, the seal of orphan, the inability to break the once formed bonds. "Dutch house" is a story about the victory of love over evil. The victory, mixed on the losses and in many ways not obvious, because ultimately the reader will have to figure out himself on whose side he is and whether the villain was here. And if there was - who?
