At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Russians of all ages were read out by the newspaper and journal publications of Vlas Mikhailovich Doroshevich, deservedly proclaimed by the rumor as the “king of the Russian press”. Doroshevich’s work was gained at the very end of the 19th century, when he began to be printed in Odessa periodicals. At that time, newspaper prose, thanks to thorough and meticulous work with the word, stood on a par with great Russian literature. The feuilletons written by Vlas Mikhailovich are still considered a role model. The public of large newspapers, accustomed to the gloomy solidity of the serious political organs of the press, first had to get acquainted with the light, first of all, taking care of entertaining, the manner of the “small press”. The writer"s feuilletons combined the splendor and ease of form with the fullness of serious journalistic tasks. One of Doroshevich’s bright feuilleton is “a case of cannibalism”. The action takes place in the town of Navkhryai. It all starts with the disappearance of the nearby overseer Siluyanov. It cannot be found for a long time, but it soon turns out that the merchant Athanasius Semipudov told how he ate a pie with the missing, however, what happened next, he did not remember, because he was very drunk. Semipudov is immediately detained on suspicion of ... cannibalism. Doroshevich pays special attention in his work to a trip to Sakhalin, held in 1897. The result of this trip was the outline of hard labor. It gave subtle psychological portraits of hard labor workers, it is truthfully described their entire life, and most importantly - horror and hopelessness that were waiting for them in exile on the island. One of the most striking chapters of the book is dedicated to the exile Sofya Ivanovna Bluvstein - the legendary adventurer and fraud of the late 19th century Sonya Golden Hand, which was the organizer of many daring robberies and “wet deeds”. The present collected works are called upon to fully introduce readers with the multifaceted work of Vlas Doroshevich, including the famous feuilletons, stories, court essays, the collection of “hard labor”, as well as fairy tales and other works of the writer
