The action of the new novel by Christian Krakht (born 1966), written on the main principle of building a performance in the Japanese Theater but Dzö Ha-Ku, takes place in Japan and Germany in the 30s of the twentieth century. In the center is the figures of the Swiss film director Emil Negeli and the Japanese official of the Ministry of Culture of Masachiko Amakasu, who had the idea to create a “celluloid axis" Berlin -Tokyo in order to“ confront American cultural imperialism ”. In his unique manner, Krakht tells how the world of the 1930s became more cruel because of cultural chauvinism, and at the same time-appeals to those semantic resources that the cultural tradition is ready to provide us.
In 2016, the novel "Dead" was awarded the Literary Prize named after Herman Gesse (City of Karlsruhe) and the Swiss Book Prize. The Swiss jury praised this novel as “Ommage to a dumb cinema and as a historical study that has material in history and for a political analysis of our time.”
