In September 1969, an awkward, capricious, old church deacon, at the nickname of a sports jacket, bursts into the courtyard of the residential complex in South Brooklyn, pulls out a 38th caliber pistol from his pocket and, in front of everyone, shoots at the local drug dealer Dins Clemens. Once, Clemens was a state of hope for a baseball team, which was trained by the jacket. Everyone wonders why the jacket shot the drug dealer.
Unraveling the story, the author tells about everyone who has a relationship to it: Clemens, witnesses of African Americans and Latin Americans, white neighbors, local policemen, members of the Baptist Church, where the jacket was deacon, Italian gangsters and the jacket itself. As the narrative is deepened, it becomes clear that the life of the characters who find themselves in a stormy whirlpool of New York of the 1960s intersect in an unexpected way. When the truth still pops up, McBride shows us that not all secrets need to be hidden, that the best way to grow is to meet changes without fear, and that the seeds of love lie in the hope and compassion.
