The first short story in European literature, "Daphnis and Chloe" Long is not just an articular erotic story about the beauty of shepherd life, in it an ancient philosophy of love expressed in it with unprecedented power. Without this work, the image of antiquity is not full, it can be called an artistic study of how love from an unconscious feeling turns into a reasonable creative force. Reading "Daphnis and Chloe" is a kind of psychological experiment and at the same time introduction into the highest concepts of classical philosophy. In the XX century, "Daphnis and Chloe" were embodied in different arts, from ballet to cinema. This publication includes a translation of the short story, made by the outstanding Russian writer D. S. Merezhkovsky, and his own article on Long. The modern scientific view of the work is presented in the introductory article of prof. A.V. Markova
