The time of writing the original part of the book is spring 1967, before the letter of the author IV Congress of Soviet writers - and at that moment it was not supposed to be continued. However, with the development of events, the need to continue the plot arose - and three additions were written consistently - in November 1967, February 1971 and December 1973 (Notes made when writing this main building of the books are not dated) Already then the author meant in mind in mind The future to write an addition to the "Invisibility" and collected materials for him, almost only orally: in Soviet conditions it was impossible to entrust the paper even with a draft sketch - in its extreme danger for associates, assistants, well -wishers and friends. All parts of the book
Prior to the exile of the author from the USSR, they were written in the suburbs (Christmas-on-Hysty, Zhukovka and Peredelkino).
Immediately after the exile in February 1974 - the fourth addition was written in Switzerland (interchange: arrest and expulsion) In this composition, the essays “Baded the calf with an oak” were first published in Russian at the Paris publishing house “Imka Press” (1975), then, in translations from this publication, the book was published in many languages. Then, in the summer of 1974 and 1975, the fifth addition, "invisibility" were written in the Zurich Highlands. But for the sake of the safety of the invisibles themselves, the chapter could not be published for many more years about them. In 1978, the chapter "on the surface" was included before the “Kremlin meetings” that had not entered anywhere on the preserved author"s record made during the meetings themselves. In his homeland, the text of the Talca with all five additions was first printed in the magazine "New World" (1991, No. 6-8, 11-12) However, some participants and details could not be named then. A few years later, when these restrictions were disappeared, the full text of the book was printed in the publishing house "Consent" (1996) For many years, the author clarified, in absentia and full -time survey of actors, the details of their participation and his consequences. Thus appeared in the text of the book of adding and amendments and new notes dated 1978, 1986, 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2004. The author undertook the last edit in 2004. In this final form, the text is first printed in this collected works. For the first time, we also provided the text with an announced named index, I thank V. A. Astankov for the help of it when compiling it. The manuscripts of all consistently written parts of the book, as well as typewritten and printed specimens with author"s editing are stored in the archive of A. I. Solzhenitsyn in Trinity-Slykovo.
