The very idea of utopia belongs to Plato, who, in fact, created, in his “state”, the first model of ideal society in the history of European thought. However, the genre of literary utopia-that is, the works describing a society that are perfectly happy from the point of view of the author-is relatively young: the outstanding British humanist of the 16th century Thomas Mor is officially considered his creator father. He also gave his “wonderful island” (and at the same time to the whole genre) the name “utopia” - either from the Greek “good place”, or from the Greek “place that is not.”
How did they imagine The ideal society of the great dreamers of the distant past?
rational Thomas Mor allowed the existence of slaves in his ideal society, but he ardently welcomed the equality of women, universal literacy and ban on the death penalty ...
The frantic Tommaso Campanella presented to the court of shocked contemporaries eccentric ideas state education of children, “free love” and the death of a traditional family ...

The societies that have to be read about in this collection are unlikely to seem to the modern reader“ utopian ”in the usual sense of the word, but it will be all the more interesting to find out how the happiness of mankind many centuries ago imagined
