The family of Carl Stern never went to the synagogue - his parents atheists, and he did not feel like a Jew at all. Karl draws comics, and his dad is the owner of the art gallery and in the past the hero of the First World War. But in Berlin, the second half of the 1930s, very soon everyone will not care what Karl is interested in and who his father is, only one thing will be important - what kind of nationality they are.
After Carl is brutally beaten by classmates, he decides to learn to fight. In this Karl, a friend of his father, the legendary boxer Max Shmeeling, who involuntarily became a symbol of Nazi ideology, will help. While Karl makes success in boxing, the situation in the country is becoming more and more unbearable.
Robert Sharne, Roman Sharhen, talks about the main tragedy of the 20th century, about how imperceptibly and everyday people are capable of becoming monsters, about how hatred comes and the whole country turns into an arena of battle
