The talent of Julian Semenovich Semenov (1931-1993) showed in Soviet literature an amazingly harmonious union of artistic fiction and historical facts. In the cycle of novels and stories about the scout Stirlitz (Isaev), these two elements intertwined so openly that it is sometimes difficult to distinguish one from the other.
The first volume of “Alternatives” includes the novels “Diamonds for the dictatorship of the proletariat”, “Password is not needed”, the story “Spanish Option” and the story “Tenderness”, covering the activities of the protagonist in 1921-1937.
The second volume includes the novels of Alternative and the Third Map, telling about the adventures of the scout during the Second World War.
The third volume of the Alternatives included the novels Major Wild and Seventeen Moments of Spring. The fate of the scout brought the hero to Germany during the years of the highest heyday of the Third Reich. Only composure and ingenuity saved the Stirlitz from the failure this time.
The fourth volume of “Alternatives” includes the novels “Despair”, where the hero returns to his homeland and turns out to be an enemy of the people, and “Bomb for the chairman”, where Stirlitz goes to West Berlin in search of his missing graduate student
