September 1919. Young Tristan goes to the English hinterland to convey the bunch of Wille"s letters, with whom he fought in the First World War. But letters are just an excuse for this trip. He is oppressed by the secret that he has long been in his soul. Plunging in the memories of a meaningless and cruel war, about friendship with Will, about how this friendship made him happy and unhappy at the same time, Tristan is trying to understand who Will was, and who he himself is a traitor, a hero or a victim. Feeling guilt and shame shall loom in the background of this novel. John Boyn extremely skillfully leads the reader in circles of his story, showing that many things we are ashamed of do not deserve this, and the actions that we are sometimes proud are often true shame.
