The Chinese language is tonal, so the most important factor in achieving a good level of proficiency in Chinese for students is correct pronunciation, especially the correct pronunciation of syllables in the four tones, i.e., proper phonetic preparation. This textbook is aimed at high school students and students of non-language majors and is designed for 16-20 instructional hours (with a total course duration of no more than 1.5 months). It practically lacks special phonetic terms and diagrams of speech apparatus structure. The principles of sound pronunciation are described not from a theoretical point of view, but from the point of view of the pronunciation process, relying on people's innate ability to imitate pronunciation. The textbook includes a large amount of phonetic material, accessible via a link on the cover. Listening to audio materials is an essential condition for mastering pronunciation skills. The presence of four tones in the Chinese language complicates the study for Russian-speaking students and leads to a prolonged mastery of correct pronunciation. For each case of reading a syllable whose tone poses a particular difficulty, the textbook offers author-developed graphic schemes with detailed comments. Visual perception of the scheme facilitates students' understanding of how to correctly pronounce the syllable. In each of the four lessons of the textbook, the pronunciation of syllables and combinations of syllables is considered, and reading and listening exercises are provided in the following sequence: individual syllables, two-syllable combinations, and multi-syllable combinations. Examples for pronouncing two-syllable and multi-syllable combinations are usually taken from the high-frequency vocabulary contained in Chinese language textbooks. Thus, students not only receive sufficient phonetic practice but also acquire solid knowledge of pronunciation rules, which facilitates the learning process in the future. After completing the phonetic part of the language course, in the next stage of language learning, it is necessary to constantly pay attention to phonetics, use phonetic tasks, and correct incorrect pronunciation.
